The first two years of the Syrian revolution were a war of attrition between the Syrian regime and a broad coalition of armed opposition groups. The Syrian revolution has now entered its third year, and the regime has made a concerted effort to regain ground lost to opposition forces in the war-torn country. A major goal of the regime in this year has been to establish a "safe zone" in the Syrian countryside near the border with Turkey.
The regime has begun constructing such a zone in the areas around the city of Deir ez-Zor, in northwest Syria. This is not the first time the regime has undertaken such an endeavor
